The decision to form the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association was taken at a meeting in Edinburgh on 28th January 1888, attended by 63 delegates from some 20 clubs from across Scotland. However, swimming activity in an organised form was happening in the West of Scotland for years prior to that date. To commemorate the Centenary of the SASA in 1988, Peter Bilsborough compiled a “history” in the publication “One Hundered Years of Scottish Swimming”.
Extracts from that publication constitute this abbreviated history, that focuses on activities of the Western Counties Amateur Swimming Association, the original name of the current West District and are available at the links below. The extracts from “One Hundred Years of Scottish Swimming” are produced with the kind permission of Ellen Bilsborough.
